Rising consumer costs could start to increase restaurant menu prices
WICHITA, Kansas (KWCH) – US Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that inflation rose 5% between May 2020 and May 2021. This is the largest 12-month inflation increase since the 2008 financial crisis. This could force some restaurants and caterers to increase prices menus, as their costs also continue to increase.
âThe price of food has gone up tremendously and I can see it,â said Randa Toubia, chef and co-owner of Two Olives restaurant. âIt has (been) creeping in the past two months. “
In recent months, Toubia said she has seen more people dine at the restaurant, around the same time that prices were rising.
âJust the chicken has gone up, it’s double what it was before. All beef prices have gone up, maybe 50 percent,â she said.
At Two Olives near 29th and Rock Road in northeast Wichita, restaurant manager Ivan Guzman understands the struggles of the food industry.
âWe have to hire people because the business is back to normal,â he said. âAnd yes, I think this situation is not just this restaurant. It’s everywhere.”
Guzman said he was feeling the struggle at the grocery store as well.
âLimes and lemons (are) expensive now. You go to a Mexican store six months ago you could buy 15 lemons for $ 1. Right now it’s only three lemons for $ 1, âhe said.
As costs increase with demand, menu prices will likely increase, Guzman said.
âOf course, we’re going to have to do it. âWe have to do what we have to do, like everyone else,â he said.
